In 2007 Sirma Media developed and integrated the Semantic repository for educational resources (first stage) into the National educational portal of the Ministry of Education.

The content of the National educational portal of the schools in Bulgaria, developed for the Ministry of Education, is the digital equivalent of the current textbooks, according to the curriculum. On the other hand the knowledge portal „Znam.BG” contains a huge quantity of useful knowledge material – in-depth encyclopedias, reference material, historical documents and literature. This information adds to and enriches the e-textbooks from the ME Educational portal – it also creates a broader context and link between the curriculum and the real world. Therefore the most logical step was to integrate the two portals in order to make easier the usage of material in the educational process as well as when creating specific electronic lessons.

Among the key points of the work on the first stage of the project of development and integration of the semantic repository are:

• Creation of a hierarchic structure of the curriculums and instruments for their management
• Integration of the KIM semantic platform
• Relation of the relevant digital content to the hierarchic curriculum structure
• Giving users of the portal rich possibilities for work with the digital content
• Integration of „Znam.BG” with the National educational portal of the schools in Bulgaria
• Wrapping of the „Znam.BG” articles as educational objects on the SCORM standard
• Possibility for the integration of „Znam.BG” with any digital content, compatible with the SCORM standard
• Accessibility of the „Znam.BG” articles through a universal internet identifier
• Integrated search into the resources of „Znam.BG”

A second stage of the project for the further development of the semantic repository is forthcoming. It will include the following components:

• Automatic recognition of semantic objects in a Bulgarian text
• Introduction of semantic search
• Domain classification – development of a domain classification and association of the resources with it
• Terminological dictionaries and infrastructure for support and expansion
• Creation of the curriculums and resources for 1-8 grades
• Further implementation of the learning management system into the National educational portal of the Ministry of Education
• Integration of the learning management system with digital registers
• Development and support of a centralized directory of the users of the educational system
